Dr. Ruth Burrows Obituary

Dr. Ruth Burrows, PhD

Dr. Ruth Burrows was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Grover and Geneva Baynes. She received her education from the Philadelphia Public School System.  Dr. Burrows is the mother of 8 children of which 2 has preceded her in death: Edward, Jr and Edward Orlando. Six have been baptized in Jesus’ name and 5 are filled with the Holy Ghost.

As a young teenager, the desire to help minister to the physical needs of people became very strong. She decided to go into the profession of nursing.  Unfortunately, she did not continue her education and married at an early age to Edward Burrows.

Years later, as her children became older, the opportunity came for her to go to school to become a practical nurse.  She received her diploma from the James Martin Vocational School and consequently took and passed her State Board examination and became a Licensed Graduate Practical Nurse (LGPN).  Since receiving her degree, she used her profession and experience to help further the healing and comforting of those in need.

In 1964, Dr. Burrows heard the Gospel preached in its fulness at the Kingdom of Heaven Apostolic Church, pastored by Elder Junius Brock.  Realizing the need to be saved, she was baptized in the name of Jesus and received the Holy Ghost in May, 1964.

Dr. Burrows has been a faithful worker in Zion and has done extensive missionary work both locally and as far as Puerto Rico.  She served as President and Vice President of the Nurses Guild, President and organizer of the Usher Board, Assistant Secretary, Parliamentarian, and choir member of the Missionary Board of the Greater Pennsylvania State Council of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (P.A. of W.).

In 1975, the Lord called Dr. Burrows into the ministry.  She then began to prepare herself by studying the Word of God extensively.  For 2 years, Dr. Burrows attended Aenon Bible College and was an A and B student.

Initially, her ministry began at “a snail’s pace” and in her spirit she knew she was not even scratching the surface in regards to what God wanted her to do.  Dr. Burrows was blessed to have a prison ministry at the House of Corrections which enabled her to preach, teach, and minister to the prisoners from a one-                                                                                                                  on-one basis.  Blessed of God to be able to teach His word, Dr. Burrows was given scripture by God to “Go ye therefore and teach all nations.”  She became a renowned teacher of God’s Word.

Dr. Burrows taught church history and Christian education at Bible Revival College in Baltimore, Maryland, where she was also the Assistant Director. She continued her education at Jameson School of Ministry and was ordained in 1982, receiving her Doctorate Degree from Jameson College in 1984.

Dr. Burrows was called of God to pastor in 1982 and has gone through many tests and trials before accepting this great and high calling.  God gave her a vision of reaching those that were lost and once reached, led them to Christ.  Her prayer was “Lord, grant me the strength to break through all hang ups, obstacles, idiosyncrasies, family, friends, money, fame, and anything else that will prevent me from doing the work that has been assigned to my hands to do.”  Dr. Burrows was installed as Pastor of New St. Paul Apostolic Church on June 25, 1989.  Since Pastoring, Dr. Burrows continued her education and received her Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Theology, her Master’s Degree in Theology, and her PhD in Biblical Studies.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children: Margaret O. Tolbert, Min. Joan M. Mitchell, Ruth Burrows (our mom’s Caregiver), Bishop Reginald Burrows, PhD (Lady Faith), James Burrows, Victoria Burrows. One sister: Min. Mary Johnson. Thirty One Grandchildren of one she raised from 5 days old, Min. James Burrows, Jr. (Allenda), Seventy Seven Great Grandchildren, Forty Four Great Great Grandchildren, Two Great Great Great Grandchildren. Two Godchildren: Starlet “Sugar” Gomez and Diontae Mosley.
