Gloria Whetstone Obituary

Gloria Devonne Whetstone was born May 6, 1951 in Concord North Carolina and made her transition on April 6, 2021 in Philadelphia, PA.

Gloria was united in marriage to the late Levarn Carl Whetstone Jr., as a result they had four wonderful children.

Gloria was educated in the Philadelphia Public School District and later went on to study at the Community College of Philadelphia.

Gloria had a passion for helping people less fortunate.  She worked for the Philadelphia School District at Carver Elementary in North Philadelphia and was President of the Home and School Association.

While at Carver, Gloria worked tirelessly along side Georgie Woods, Mary Mason and Milton Street to help remove the principle who did not act to put the safety and best interest of the students and families first.  Through her protesting and unwavering determination, Gloria successfully caused the principle to resign and the status of the school improved.

Gloria then went on to helping women and children as an active advocate with Women Against Abuse.  Due to her passion of helping women she received many awards and honors for the great work she did for the organization and the numerous lives she impacted.

Gloria worked for and eventually retired from the Horizon House after several years of helping the homeless community in both Philadelphia and Norristown.

Gloria and her family lived on the 4200 block of North Hicks Street for over 40 years, and she was a pilar in the community.  Gloria’s home was the children of the community home.  Having three active sons and an outgoing beautiful daughter, not a day would go by that her home wasn’t filled with youthful laughter, playful joking and the sounds of doors opening and closing.

As a staple in the community, Gloria was known for hosting summertime fun for the kids, feeding the community kids and holiday events; Never falling short of bringing smiles and joy to everyone she encountered.

Gloria is going home to join both parents, Madie Young Rogers, mother and Arthur Rogers, father.  Along with a host of uncles, aunts, grandparents, and other relatives.

She is survived by her two brothers, Danny Weaks and Arthur Nathaniel Douglas, her beloved children, Carl, Tony, Temia and Darrell Whetstone.  Six grandchildren, Terrell, LaShay, Ciarra, Darrius, Tay and Jay.  Her six great-grandchildren, Major, Malaysia, Milan, Laila, Nya, and Hamza.  Three daughters-in-law, Wanda, Mary and Toni Whetstone.  One uncle, Dennis “Leon” Young and one aunt, Teresa Sandars.  Two god-daughters, Jenise Wells and Alisha Robinnson.  A host of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and other family and friends.
