Jamel Eugene Coates
Was born on May 21,1974 to the late Gerald Lundy and YvettaCoates in Queens, NY. Jamel was educated in the Philadelphia Public School system during his Elementary years and then moved back to New York to be with his father to finish his schooling in the New York Public School system.
Jamel “Mel “ as most affectionately called him, was the life of the party. He loved his family and made friends wherever he went. Food was his love language. He was always cooking or eating something. He loved cooking meals for everyone just as much as we loved eating them. It’s how he connected with people. If he wasn’t feeding you, he was fussing at you.
Jamel enjoyed being with his family. Oftentimes he spent his time at his Mom’s house just to be near them. And tried his best to call or text them daily.
Mel loved sports. He played on the neighborhood baseball team in his younger days. And quickly turned into Team Dad once his Son got into playing sports. He enjoyed going to games and arguing with the Refs and the Coaches (because of course he knew more about the game than they did) as he would like to think.
He was also a loving Father to his kids. Dad and Pops was what they called him. He spent his days loving on them, checking on them, calling our oldest daughter just to check on her. He drove himself crazy making sure they had what they needed and that they knew he loved them and had their back no matter what.
Jamel attended New Mt Zion with his fiancé and kids. He learned he didn’t have to be the tough guy and he could love his family unconditionally. And that’s just what he did until he went home to glory.
He leaves to cherish in his memory his loving Fiancé Taneshia, Mother Yvetta, Step-father, Richard, Grandmother Mamie, Three Daughters: Chadiya, Tynea and Jayla; Two Sons: Jamel and Jarell and his Bonus Son Chris; Four Sisters: Donya (Steven), Lakisha ,Victoria and Monique; Two Brothers: Unique and Kareem; Six Grandkids and a Host of Nieces, Nephew , Aunts , Uncles, Cousins and Friends. Special mention to his 17th Street and Bouvier Street family and friends. We all love him and will miss him dearly.
