James Vernon Pines, also known as Butch, passed away on May 28, 2023, at the age of 81 in Glenolden, Pennsylvania. James was born on June 25, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to James Emery Pines and Margaret Jett Pines. He attended Bok High School before joining the Army in 1958, where he served until 1960.

After his military service, James started his career in 1976 at the City of Philadelphia Water Department. He worked his way up to plant supervisor, retiring in 1998. James was a hardworking man who took pride in his job.

James was a spiritual man, frequently reading the Bible and attending church. He was a collector of fine arts, including African masks and various styles of paintings. James also had a love for collecting baseball cards, boxing memorabilia, old coins, and two bills. He enjoyed going to various free markets and auctions, obtaining and selling collectible items throughout the tri-state area. James also loved to fish, cook, and garden.

James was a family-oriented man, married to Venus Hall from 1980 to 1983, during which time they had one child, Candace M. Pines. Candace was the apple of his eye, and he was a loving, caring, and supportive father who was always present in her life. James also had a close relationship with his great-nephews, Jamil and Jalil, whom he visited often. They affectionately called him Uncle Buck when they were younger and everybody would laugh he loved spending time with them. James also loved to spend time with is grandson Jarrell who would always say I attended James Vernon Pines University with a smile on his face. James was survived by Candace, his daughter; Jeanine Campbell, his daughter; Jarrell Campbell, his grandson; Ruth Lloyd Pines, his sister; Denise Pines, his niece; Moneek Pines, his great-niece; Jamil Pines, his great-great-nephew; Jalil Pines, his great-great-nephew; and Masai Pines - Elliott his great-great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, James.

James was also a man of many interests and hobbies. He loved to watch basketball, football, and boxing, and his favorite boxer was Muhammad Ali. He was a stickler for being on time and expected others to do the same. James enjoyed cooking, especially seafood, and he was known for his frying skills. He also loved to fish and taught his grandson, Jarrell, how to fish. James will be truly missed by his loved ones, and may he rest in peace.
