Joel Ezekiel Rivers

Joel Ezekiel Rivers, affectionately known as Joe-Joe and Joey, passed away on December 21, 2024 peacefully in his home. Born on April 28, 1999, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, the second oldest son to Constance Rivers and only son of Troy Butler.

Joel received his education in the Philadelphia school district, graduating from Franklin Learning Center High School in 2018, where he excelled in singing and chorale.

Joel excelled academically and had a deep passion for music, often writing lyrics and creating melodies. His voice was a gift that resonated in school hallways, church choirs, and during solo performances that were frequently requested by those who admired his talent.

Joel had a deep love for God and found joy in worshiping Him through praise and song. From a young age, he embraced his faith and became a living testament to God’s miracles, especially after experiencing a life-changing one at the age of 12. Joel dedicated his life to Christ as a child and became an active member of New Inspirational Baptist Church.

He served faithfully on the junior security team alongside Keon, Little Rinny, Jamir, and Frankie. His passion for music and worship shone brightly as he led songs in the children’s choir and later became a key voice in the NIBC Outreach Choir, where his powerful singing inspired and uplifted many.

Beyond his musical abilities, Joel was a loving and devoted brother—cherished as a younger brother to Nae-Nae as they both shared the same birthdate and a protective big brother to Kiyyah and Hazel.

Joel’s care for others extended beyond his family. He became a familiar face to many as a school driver at Green Gardens, greeting students with warmth each day. He later transitioned into providing exceptional customer service at ShopRite and Fresh Grocer, consistently showcasing his dedication and charm. Most recently, Joel pursued his talents at the Art Institute and shared meaningful conversations with city residents as an Uber driver, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Joey had a vibrant personality that lit up any room. His infectious smile and playful nature were unmatched, as he loved teasing, laughing, and cracking jokes with everyone around him. Confident in his striking good looks, Joey always stayed impeccably dressed and sharp, capturing photos that could easily grace the pages of high-fashion magazines.

Joel was preceded in death by his grandmothers Rose Nelson and Rebecca Butler, grandfather Dave Washington, Uncle Levi Jr. and cousin Sean May. Joel leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his devoted family: his mother, Constance Rivers; father, Troy Butler; and bonus father, Rev. Tai’Kwan Curreton-Williams of Georgia. He is also lovingly remembered by his two sisters, Deborah Rivers and Zakiyyah Johnson; his brother, Hazel Rivers; and his maternal grandparents, Patricia and Levi Rivers, Sr.

Joel’s memory will live on through his aunts, Barbra Foots, Sylvia Poole, Margaret Cash, Dawn Butler, and Nadine Taylor (Rev. Laverne); his uncles, Harry Rivers (Crystal), Alfonso Butler (Edna), and David Butler; as well as his two nephews, Bryant Washington, Jr. and Braveri Rivers. He also held a special bond with his Godmother, Natia Cottman; God-Siblings, Christopher Green and Lacricia Hines, along with a host of other relatives and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
