Kevin Sanford was born on January 3, 1955, to James Roosevelt Sanford and Ethel Cisco. He was one of nine children: 5 boys and 4 girls. An avid sports fan, Kevin enjoyed playing ball with friends in his North Philadelphia neighborhood. In addition, he was known as the neighborhood ‘Pretty Boy’, always gaining attention for his good looks. He attended the Philadelphia School District until the 11th grade, when he withdrew from Benjamin Franklin High School to pursue other interests. He worked at Biggie’s Market for several years, then went on to work as a carpet layer for National Floor Coverings. In November 1979, Kevin decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and enlist in the Armed Forces. His father’s tenure had been with the United States Navy, so he decided to serve in the United States Army. He was honorably retired in August 1980 due to being injured by friendly fire. It was a short tenure, but he was still proud to have had the opportunity to serve.
After retiring from the military, Kevin returned home to his family and friends. He had struggles with his overall health, dealing with hypertension and diabetes, as well as other health issues. Despite this, he was always willing to help any friend or family member in need, whether that need was financial or a place of shelter, often accepting family members into his home to live for as long as they needed.
On the evening of April 27, 2022, Kevin was called home from this earthly realm. He is survived by his wife of nearly 35 years, Hattie; their only child, Janiah; and only grandchild, Gabriel. He also leaves behind two brothers: Teddy and Reggie, and his only remaining sister, Paulette; as well as five brothers-in law and three sisters-in law. In addition, he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; including a special cousin, Glenda Robinson. Preceding his call home are his mother and father, and five siblings: Mary Ann, James, Regina, Pella, and Sammy.
