Melvin Bailey, Jr. was born to the late Melvin Bailey, Sr., and Alice Mae Bailey on March 16, 1953, in Denver, Colorado. He was the second oldest of three children.
During his childhood, his family relocated to the Eastern Shore borderline. Melvin was educated in the North Hampton Public School system and graduated from North Hampton High School. He would later enlist in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged after four years of service.
After his time in the service, Melvin moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he met and married Mildred Jefferson. Their union raised four children.
Melvin was a beloved father and an avid sports fan, sharing his love of sports with his son and grandsons. His passion for baseball led him to join a neighborhood team called the ‘Diamond Stars’ as an outfielder. Melvin also loved football. He was a huge Los Angeles Raiders fan, but never missed the opportunity to show love to his hometown team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Melvin accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at Childs Memorial Baptist Church in 2016. He attended service regularly and served as a member of the Usher’s Ministry.
Melvin was predeceased by his first-born grandson, Jianni Harper and two brothers-in-law, Eddie L. Jefferson, Jr. and Joseph West.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memory: 4 children, Erica (Arthur), Tennelle (George), Yolanda, and Marques (Melanie); 11 grandchildren, Kayla, Sierra, Taylor, Eriq, Jayla Marques, Daequan, Kamare, Kamiyah, Kamyah, and McKenzie; 5 great grandchildren, Ryan, Kai, Kennidi, Siyore, and Zier; step-father, Frizzel Thomas of Ardmore, PA; sisters, Loretta Holloman of Mantua, NJ, and Marva West of Swedesboro, NJ; a long time special friend, Constance Whitmore; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends, and church family.
