Tamika Danielle Purnell

Affectionately called “Mika” came into this world early Tuesday morning July 11, 1972, to parents Doris & John Lee Purnell. She grew up with strong family support, especially from grandmom Nettie. She was a bright, inquisitive, sweet spirited child, who shared a close bond with her big brother Anthony. Mika attended public and parochial schools, graduating from Overbrook High School in 1991. She was always educating herself and increasing her experiences of life and its lessons. Her sweet spirit was so engaging; attracting many long-lasting friendships: Tamika, Malinda, Tamika B., Rukiya and more. She had an entrepreneurial drive, developing her own cleaning materials while working at HUP Dental School. One of her biggest desires was to start a Personal Care Home for Veterans,” honoring her father, grandfather, brother and uncle who all served in the military. The joy of her life was becoming a mother, raising two daughters, Amber and Kayla and three grandsons, Kadir, Khyree & Kaysiah.

In March 2005 following constant trips to various hospitals for chronic health issues, she was diagnosed with a rare, treacherous disease called Multiple Myeloma, that ravaged her body. But Mike took it with stride, educating and advocating for herself, determined to beat this monster. She created a strong team with her cousin Khadijah, Dina, Stacy and others creating her foundation “Tamike Purnell Foundation.”

Tamika enjoyed life, she loved roller skating and dancing to old school and hip hop. She had a close relationship with her cousins Ikenya, Anwar, Karima, Ajeenah & Tahir (predeceased). She loved the Lord, getting baptized and redirecting her focus.

Our precious Tamike fought a good fight until our Heavenly Father said daughter, “Your work is done. I am waiting for you with open arms” and Tamika took off with God Speed Tuesday evening, June 16, 2026.

Tamika leaves to mourn her Mother, Doris Purnell, Daughters, Amber and Kayla, Brother Anthony Jones (Carla), Grandmother Thelma, Uncle Oscar and a host of cousins and many friends.
