Willie Edward Jones, Sr., affectionately called "Mr. Bill," was called home to eternal rest on Saturday, December 30, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love and enduring contributions.
Willie "Bill" was born in Rocky Mount, NC, on November 14, 1940, and was the eldest of three children born to Ola May Jones and Willie M. Jones. As a young child, Bill's family moved to Philadelphia, PA. He was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and graduated from Thomas Edison High School in 1958.
In his youth, Bill was known for his boundless energy and zest for life. After graduating high school, he began his career with the City of Philadelphia. Bill worked in the Sanitation Department as a tractor-trailer driver for 30 years and, preceding his retirement, was promoted to supervisor. Bill loved sharing stories about the sights and experiences he encountered while on his long drives. Bill pursued his passions with determination and was a source of inspiration to many.
In 1981, he met and fell head over heels in love with Lavella Elaine Welcome. The two were united in holy matrimony on December 14, 1988. Bill and Elaine were inseparable. If you saw one, you knew the other was nearby. The couple enjoyed long drives and family vacations to Florida, North Carolina, and Ocean City, Maryland.
Spending time with family brought Bill immense joy. He was a great father and grandfather. He loved teaching his family how to drive when they earned their driver's permits. You knew he was serious when the orange cones came out of the trunk. Being a grandfather came naturally to Bill. He never missed a milestone, and a point of pride was sharing the same birthday with his grandson, Jaden Thompson.
Bill was a proud member of the O.E.S. Chapter of the Masons, and was a member of many houses in Masonry. He proudly adorned vehicles with Masonic emblems. A devoted son, brother, husband, and father, he leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and enduring memories that will be cherished by those fortunate enough to have known him.
Bill's faith was a guiding force throughout his life, and he actively contributed to the church community by serving in various capacities, from church trustee to security officer. His kindness, empathy, and unwavering commitment to his faith were evident in his positive impact on those around him.
As the years passed, Bill bravely faced the challenges of dementia with valor. Despite the gradual fading of his once-sharp mind, the essence of his character continued to shine through. His smile remained a beacon of warmth, and the love in his heart for his family never waned. Even in the face of adversity, he displayed remarkable courage and resilience.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ola May Jones; his dad, Willie M. Jones; sister, Olga Bethea; daughter, Alvetta A. Jones; sons, Willie Jones and Kevin Scott; grandson, Antoine Jones.
Willie E Jones, Sr. is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Lavella Elaine Jones; his children, Lisa L. Jones, Tameka M. Jones, Fredrick K. Scott, and Veronica Holloway; his stepchildren, Shawanna James-Coles (Bernardo), Gerald James, Jr. (Amy), and Dr. Raye Thompson (Leonard). He also leaves to cherish his memory 13 grandchildren, Jared Coles, Kelli Coles, Jordan James, Jaden Thompson, Amaya James, Jackson James, Kaseem Haggans, Danira Haggans, Tiara Jones, Taisha Scott, Ciani Henry, Ke'sha Holloway, and Jahir Holloway; 5 great-grandchildren, Kevin Haggans, Le'ani Larke, La'Leias Larke, Saint Scott, Adonis Martin and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins and friends.
