Obituary

Valerie R. Durden, known as “Val” to her family and friends was born on June 4, 1962 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Alyce Lois Allen “Alice” and William “Bill” Hart who both preceded her in death. She was educated in the  Archdiocese of Philadelphia school system.

Val accepted the Lord as her Savior in her youth and adulthood. In 2020, she joined Greenwood Baptist church. She enjoyed hearing and reading the word. She loved prayer, it’s where she felt the most peace and connection to God.

Val was a very thoughtful and caring person. She always went above and beyond to make the people in her life feel special. Especially on special occasions such as birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, graduations, and new births. She was big on acknowledging everyone’s special day. She was also notorious for helping those in need. Not only would she give to those around her, but she also donated to charities across the globe.

Val will be remembered for her sense of style. She loved to dress up and coordinate her outfits to make them pop with accessories and pocketbooks to match. She also loved to dance and listen to music. Her favorite song was Mama by Boyz II Men. This song reminded her of her children. During the Christmas holiday she would show how creative she was when she decorated her home with the beautiful colors of the holiday season.

Val enjoyed serving others. She was employed at New Deals Restaurant where she served as a waitress and listening ear to her customers in the early 90’s. She later worked at Value City in Springfield, Pennsylvania as a retail associate. She enjoyed her Value City family and created friendships that lasted until she was called home.

Val had a special bond with her children. She enjoyed spending time with them. Those times were filled with laughter, comfort, tears, and sometimes she just had to give them a piece of her mind. Mom didn’t play! She also loved her grandchildren deeply. They filled her up with so much joy. They could do no wrong in her eyes, but when they did she made it known she expected better. She also had a special love for her cat Fiona. Fiona also could do no wrong in her eyes.

Val is survived by two sisters Francine and Linda; five children, Valerie, Trinita, Alfred, Alphonso, Tyreik; one son-in-law Rodney and one daughter in-love Tasha. She also leaves to cherish her memories: ten grandchildren, Chanteana, Amir, Tymir, Azaye, Zyairah, Hezekiah, Jymir, Nyshawn, Trinise, and Zanaii; one great grandchild on the way; five godchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
